The tour to the Bayano Lake caves in Panama is an experience that moves the human spirit.
Discovering a natural area, of such great and enormous beauty, is an exciting adventure and shows us, at the same time, the ephemeral nature of our time in this world; leading us to remember that we must responsibly conserve our world with all its natural wonders.
The tour leaves at 6:00 a.m. from Panama City, heading to Lake Bayano, an important natural resource in Panama. After 1:45 hours on the highway, we arrive at the town of Cañita, to then board our boat, with which we will cross Lake Bayano for about 0:30 minutes, until we reach the entrance of the caves.
Upon arrival, we will get equipped to start this impressive journey underground, through a canyon, with huge passageways, where we will find a variety of small animals that inhabit this ecosystem without sunlight, crystal clear water lagoons, huge limestone rock formations formed through centuries, until reaching a lagoon, where we can take a refreshing bath in crystalline waters.
This tour inside the cave lasts approximately 3 hours. After our rest, we will return to the shore of the lake, to be picked up by our boat and return to the small port of the bridge over Lake Bayano, where we can change our wet clothes for dry and clean ones, then we will board our transport, which will transfer us to Cañita for a delicious lunch, before heading back to Panama City.
On this tour it is possible to observe different species of birds such as: Neotropic Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Great Egret, Black Vulture, Osprey, Broad-winged Hawk, Ringed Kingfisher, Tucans, Great Kiskadee, Crested Caracara; Mammals such as: Mantled Howler Monkey, Neotropical River Otter, Three-toed Sloth, Northern Tamandua, Short-tailed Fruit Bat; Reptiles like: Green Iguana, Brown Vine Snake, Tiger Ratsnake, Fer-de-Lance and lots of amphibians and butterflies.
The entire tour lasts between 10 to 12 hours, depending on the size of the groups. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that covers most of your body from the sun. It is recommended to wear hiking shoes or closed shoes with good traction that can get wet. Bring a complete change of clothes, repellent, hat and sunscreen.
